Root pruning addresses proactively health issues directly related to girdling roots which end up choking the tree’s main trunk or other roots.
Oftentimes the tree will show symptoms of stress in the canopy with specific parts of the tree dying or shutting down early in the season. Additionally, flattening of the trunk may be observed on the side most likely affected.
Root girdling can be observed above ground with roots circling the trunk or growing intertwined. If girdling is suspected underground, we can also uncover the roots with the help of an air spade which gently removes soil around the base of the tree by blowing compressed air.
This may happen due to genetics, poor planting practices or lack of space. Unfortunately, it may be too late for some root systems to be corrected, but it may not have to be a death sentence if damaging roots are identified and pruned off early enough.
